UX design

For several years I have not felt at home with the view on interaction design present in academia (and the industry as well). The focus on effectiveness, simplicity, ease of use and what else comes with usability has seemed… narrow-minded and sometimes as a danger to good game-design. In short, my thesis is about this. The (very young) academic field allowing such thoughts is called User eXperience (UX), and after reading through much of the work in the field, I feel much more at home in academia. So many interesting texts have been written and I’m confident I can contribute to the field as well.

In UX design one considers fun before effectiveness, emotion before ease of use and experience before usability. For now, this feels right.
