Game Design

The semester course in Game Design ended last week. It was a fine course, which introduced me to a lot of literature I would have otherwise missed. Patterns in Game Design by Bjork and Holopainen springs to mind first. Very inspiring, and not as naive and simplistic as other game design books I have read. The four player types introduced by Richard Bartle, in Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, Spades: Players Who Suit Muds, was also very interesting. I’m definitely an explorer, and I actually thought everyone was. That really opened up my eyes - I should not design games which are only enjoyable by other explorers - achievers and, depending on the genre, killers and socialisers should also be able to enjoy themselves.

While not reflecting on those thoughts, I wrote a vision document for at game called Act of Creation. It’s inspired by Metroid, and is therefore very explorer-minded, but it has a few unique points to it as well. Send me an e-mail if you are a publisher, interested in publishing it ;-)
