I finished Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King for the second time today. This game is amazing. Even though it is close to 100 hours long, I could hardly put it down. The characters are truly funny, the story is truly exciting and the whole feel of the game is just… well, truly wonderful. There are some serious balancing issues during the beginning, where battles are way too tough, and in general the battles are not all that exciting. In the end, it does not matter though, as the great scenario- and character design overshadows all problems. Funnily enough, Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama did the scenario- and character design for Chrono Trigger as well… guess they haven’t lost their touch.

Just finished reading about the significance of play as a cultural phenomenon by Johan Huizinga. This semester sure is diverse in its subjects. From social studies of play to code debuging and vector math. The latter is certainly more practical in creating a deliverable game, but to fully understand our design a philosophical view on it can be rather useful too.
The winner of the game design competition mentioned in my last post was announced last week at Nordic Game in Malmö. Unfortunately we got the second place. Meaning no big price, but a lot of nice critique. Worth mentioning is “Spin attests to a large knowledge of the dynamics and structure of computer games in general” and “a kind of verbal ‘Final Fantasy’ framed in danish politics“. Try the game at dr.dk/spil.
